Our Favorite Books About Garbage Trucks

When your child has a passion for something, books are a great way to fuel that passion.
I Stink! was B’s first garbage truck book. He loved it when I read the truck sounds and made faces as I read the list of garbage going into the hopper. As his interest in vehicles grew, B was increasingly drawn to books with photographs of trucks. This is what let me to write Hurray, Hurray It’s Garbage Day. Now that he is older, Grandma Drove the Garbage Truck is one of his favorite stories to read at night. More about our favorite books below.

Our Favorite Garbage Truck Books

I Stink! by Kate McMullan and Jim McMullan
I Stink! was B’s first book about garbage trucks. It is a silly story with lots of loud sounds to make and stinky garbage to laugh about. The story is about a big city like New York where the garbage trucks come out at night. We love to gift this book to new garbage truck lovers and, FYI, I Stink! is also available as a board book now.

Garbage Trucks (Mighty Machines) by Terri DeGezelle
My son has always love books with photographs of real vehicles. This garbage truck book was the first one we found with a variety of different trucks and details on how the garbage trucks work. The text doesn’t roll off your tongue when you read it, but you can let the pictures speak for themselves.

I am a Garbage Truck by Ace Landers
Board books are always a hit with toddlers. This book is a combination of information about how garbage trucks work and fun illustrations. As a woman, one of my favorite things about this book is that the driver is a woman!

Grandma Drove the Garbage Truck by Katie Clark and Amy Huntington
B is getting older so this is one of the garbage stories that appeals to all ages. He loves both of his grandmas and enjoys the idea of them driving a garbage truck around town. It is a fun story and includes a little boy who rides a long for the adventure.

Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash! by Barbara Odanaka
This is a silly story about a family of pigs who are excited for the garbage truck to come to their neighborhood at night.  It is a fun read for little garbage truck lovers.

Hurray, Hurray It’s Garbage Day! by Adriane Berman
OK. Full disclosure, this is the book that I wrote! I felt like there was a gap in the garbage truck books on the market. I wanted a good story with photographs of “real” garbage trucks. It tells the story of one child’s excitement, anticipation and joy of the weekly event of “Garbage Day!” When B was little he was embarrassed about being the focus of the book. Now that he is older and an emerging reader, he has a renewed affection for the story and is reading it to me at night. Its available on my Etsy site and also available as an eBook. Download the eBook here.
